Scope and opportunities in the oil and gas industry

B.tech doesn’t mean mere a Computer Science or Electronics, there are other branches too which have really good scopes
Opting for a geology branch and working as a geologist intern.
I never planned to be a geoscientist, but it has ended up being one of the better decisions of my life. I worked towards my IIT JEE exam in 2008 from Kota. Getting a rank of about 4000, I had lost hope. However, I researched my options and found out about Geological Technology and Geophysical Technology branches in IIT Roorkee and IIT Kharagpur. I realized that historically, these branches had produced stellar results in placements and besides that, there was a lot of scopes to pursue research in case I developed a purely academic inclination (evidently it was too early for me to decide, fresh out of class 12th). I decided to take the plunge with Geology from IIT Roorkee for a 5-year course because of its diverse scope.
In college, I started liking many subjects related to geosciences and my curiosity led me to be good at some of them. My newly grown interests led me to pursue an internship in my 3rd year abroad in Structural Geology. The internship gave me great exposure and confidence. Alongside, academics I was involved with the Tech Fest of IIT Roorkee, Cognizance. Besides being a lot of fun, the experience was very enriching. To conceptualize and organize events of such scale. I was the convenor of the event for my department which led me to get in touch with a lot of alumni in the industry.
In my pre-final year, I focused on getting a good industrial intern to get exposure to the industry. I wanted to weight my options before going towards the final year. I was lucky to get an intern with Shell as a geologist. The internship was really good as it gave me great exposure to the oil and gas industry. Our courses in the department were approx. 80% academic and only 20% were aligned towards industry back then. So, the internship really helped me and gave me a foundation as I felt really motivated to make a career in oil and gas.
In my final year, I prepared for placements for companies such as Shell, Schlumberger, Cairn Energy, ONGC. Through campus placements, I got recruited for Schlumberger. Through the Group Discussion and Interview process, I was selected.
Recommendations regarding oil and gas industry.
Currently, its been almost 5.5 years, I have been working for Schlumberger and it has been a real challenge and a pleasure. I have travelled to about 15 countries due to my work engagements to solve complex problems of producing and characterizing oil from the Earth's sub-surface.
My recommendations are that the oil and gas industry is fairly rewarding. Albeit downturns, it is a big industry, frankly one of the biggest that moves the entire world's economy, and if you can be good at your technical stuff, there is a lot of growth potential here.
